Chapped Lips? Here's How to Treat It, The Right Way

Back to blog

Chapped lips can be annoying, irritating and can sometimes cause bleeding. For a bunch of us, we get them for different reasons - be it seasonal changes or a bad lip balm reaction. Because lips don't contain oil glands like the rest of your skin, they can be exceptionally prone to drying out. The good news? There are a good few things you can do to prevent and eliminate dehydrated, chapped lips.

Prevention

Stay hydrated, inside and out - The air can be dry, so keep your home moist with a humidifier and intake plenty of water.

Use  sunscreen - If you're planning on a day out, use a lip balm with sunscreen. It will prevent your lips from getting burned, thus, preventing the peeling that often occurs afterwards.

Avoid scented and flavoured lip balms - While tasty lip balms taste nice, the ingredients found inside them can often dry out your lips.

Avoid licking - If you find yourself licking your lips frequently, then the saliva residue tends to evaporate quickly. This, in turn, dries out your lips, making them even drier than before you licked them.

Be mindful of allergens - You may have sensitive lips that react quickly to fragrances, perfumes and dyes. If this is the case, be mindful of the ingredients on your lip balms, lip glosses and lipsticks.

Treatment
If your lips are already dry, cracked, and passed the above prevention stage, there's more you can do to aid them in healing promptly.

Gently Exfoliate

When your lips are chapped, they can start to peel. You may feel the urge in wanting to peel this off, but in doing so you may be worsening its condition as skin that isn't completely dead will lead to bleeding and pain - so be mindful. Using an exfoliator is the best approach in keeping your lips healthy, clear, and plump. Our organic Honey Lip Scrub is always a good pick to tackle this problem - it's specifically designed to give you luscious lips right from your fingertips!

Moisturise

Products containing vitamin E, such as Argan oil, work hard to hold moisture in while simultaneously moisturising them. Lather a few drops onto your lips before sleeping to wake up with a noticeable difference.
